In the Springs of 2007 and 2008, Teal Farm planted more than 200 varieties (2500+ plants) of fruit and nuts, including pears, plums, quince, seaberry, aronia, blueberries, cherries, walnuts, hazelnuts, hickory, and pine nuts. We selected cold hardy varieties adapted to our landscape and built a series of wind breaks and micro-climates to lengthen the growing season and protect against high winds, which are
prevalent at the site.

The orchards are planted on existing North-facing slopes,
as well as on the terraces north of the Energy Barn, which were sculpted using soils excavated from the Energy Barn foundation. The terraced plan allows for windbreak and cold tolerant varieties on the slopes, more heat-loving varieties inside their protective curve, and annuals or low-growing perennials on the flat areas of each terrace.

We are already harvesting strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, gooseberries, currants, and plums, and in the coming years we will be stewarding the young orchard so that it develops as robustly as possible.
